John Delaney Retiring!

Hey alumni!
After almost 15 years as the Storyboard guy at Cap, original faculty member, John Delaney is leaving the big city and, unfortunately, Capilano University. He'll still be dropping into town for guest lectures but if anyone would like to say "so long" to John, he and his band, The Indestructibles, are playing the Boulevard Casino in Coquitlam on September 18th! Come out to join other former students and fellow instructors and wish John luck in the Okanangan!

The show starts at 9:30pm but get there early for a seat and maybe connect with other Commercial Animation grads!

Hey guys I thought this might be helpful: All companies are in Yaletown. All are game companies but there seems to have been a small boom in companies in that area a little while ago as a result there are jobs there still.

All are game companies.

United Front Games- Experience storyboard artist (I'm thinking Kalvin or Allen should take a look)
Action Pants- Lots of stuff but requires experience, I plan to call them and talk to them about it later.
Three Wave Software- Senior Artist, there looking for someone with 3D knowledge and experience but maybe something in the future.
Next level- Er... nevermind. 3D required.
Deep Fried Entertainment- Only Senior Front End Artist for now.
HotHead Games- No art or design jobs available at the moment.
Nexon Games- I got tired of navigating this site but it might yeild some good jobs in the future.
Piranha Games- No actual job posting just a list of skills that that hopefuls should possess. Seems kinda dark though. Still worth taking a look at.
EA- A new EA will be opening up in November this year. Just a heads up.

Hey guys,

Craig just gave me the final size for the vertical posters we're putting in the hallway, so I've changed the template size accordingly.

This means if you made a rough (or final) version of your vertical poster before 2:30pm today (Monday), you've gotta change it! It's really simple though, just open your own poster file, open the new template and re-change the text to your name--don't drag in the text layer from your previous file, because it's position won't match the new template, just re-type your name into the new template's existing text. Then drag your image layer over and align it however you want, change the background colour, and you're done. It's a very slight reduction in size, so you probably won't have to re-size your image or anything.

The template is in //Tsunami/Students/!!Gradshow_2008/VerticalPoster_CommercialTemplate.psd

If any of you weren't aware of any vertical hallway posters at all, it's all the rage, so get on the bus. We're making cool big posters, 11"x40", one for each student of both digital and commercial. You just have to make your own, and there's a template on the network. It doesn't require you to do any new artwork or anything (but you can make something new if you want), it only takes about 10 minutes to make a poster, so DO IT. You just need one fairly high-res piece of artwork (minimum 7"x7" 300dpi) and the rest is in the template. They look cool.

I'm not sure how many of you will actually give a damn, but the lost dialogue animation has (hopefully) been found!

Erich sent me an email yesterday saying he'd woken in the middle of the night, drenched in cold sweat, screaming the words "I KNOW WHERE THEY ARE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" I believe him.

Either way, they're supposedly in the little storage room in the digital room, next to Theo's desk. If someone hasn't by the time I get there tomorrow morning, I'm totally going in there and getting them.

Erich made a little announcement in class today about incomplete assignments. Most of us have one or two I's in animation right now, but they MUST be completed otherwise it is likely that you will fail the course. Erich mentioned that assignments with missing mouths, no follow-through, secondary action, et cetera count as incomplete. If you aren't sure about your animations, show him what you have done and he'll let you know if you have more work to do.

Did anyone hear when these must be completed by? Obviously before the demo reels get made, but if there was an earlier date mentioned, cause i missed it.

There's some great variety to the characters so I think the invites will look really good. Although there were some clear winners everyone got at least a couple of votes (even myself, who did not actually design a character. I have to know who's bribing me in order for it to work guys). I'm going to be selling my iMac as soon as my new one arrives, which should be end of the month. Most of you have seen it, it's the big one that I have with the 20" display. I thought I would list it here before throwing it up onto craigslist. I'm asking $900 and if anyone in the program purchases it, I will include a legal boxed copy of Adobe Creative Suite 2 Professional. It also includes the wireless keyboard and a brand new "mighty mouse" which I will give from the new system.

I sent out emails to all of you, except Cat and Jason because I don't have their emails yet, but I'm also gonna post the information here just to make sure everybody knows it. If you would like your circus character to be up for consideration to go on the invitation it needs to be posted up on your blog, or the character design blog by Wednesday night (midnight) at the latest. This is so that everyone has access to it. It should have rough colour on it if you care about what colour I paint it.
On thursday review all the characters and email me your 7 choices of people's characters (including yourself, if you choose) that should be on the invitation. If you didn't post a character you can still vote. The voting closes at 3 PM.

And then all shall be revealed at the grad meeting on Friday.

Anyone who's still interested in designing their own version of the invitation needs to have a fairly detailed rough in by this coming friday. Also, anyone who wants to possibly be on the invitation I'm doing (I say possibly because it's not going to have 24 characters on it- it's just too many) needs to have their character posted on their blog by Wednesday night. You don't need lineart or anything, but if you have specific colours in mind then it should be coloured.

Multiple scene cuts FEB 05 08

Description

Using the character(s) of your choosing, you must animate 3 scenes with a hook
up action between them, an action that is started in scene one must continue
into the next scene and then the next. This is also a DIALOGUE assignment
meaning your characters must be talking.

Responsibilities

Work very loosely at first and on all three scenes at once. It would be a good idea
to shoot a storyboard test of the 3 scenes to get the pacing right and make sure you
stage each scene to show off the action in the best way possible. Roughly key out the
scenes and once you have them working rough, you may then put the other two aside
and begin concentrating on one scene at a time.

GRADBOOK COVER!!

Just a reminder that cover design ideas for the gradbook cover are due THIS FRIDAY THE 8th. Anyone who's remotely interested, PLEASE submit a design or two (or four)! The more we have to choose from the better. They can be rough, so long as there's enough information to clearly communicate the design, and you're all welcome to do as many designs as you'd like.

It's also pretty important that you actually have an image to show everyone. Lots of good ideas have been suggested, but now they need to be on paper so we can see them in order to be useful! On Friday we'll look at all the submitted designs and narrow it down to one or two that a majority of people like, and then we can start refining those designs further.

Keep in mind that whatever kind of cover design we use must be translatable to a digital animation cover as well.

Now go design!

German Shepherd

It was a pretty exciting day today(although not the most productive :P ). My mom finally found a dog she liked and we drove down earlier to see it. We brought her home this afternoon, she's a 3 1/2 year old German Shepard and really well behaved.

We have 2 cats as well but the 2nd floor is seperate from where she's at right now. They will meet eventually though when they are ready.

I remember seeing a note on the board about a missing tablet pen? Does it have any numbers etched in it? Because I believe all the school ones are etched with a number. I happen to have lost my personal tablet pen from home which has no markings on it of any kind. I honestly can't remember what color it is. I think it was blue or brown button.

2 Character Dialogue Assignment

Description

This is a single shot assignment with two characters. Using a dialogue of your choosing, you will animate two characters talking, at one point in the scene, the two characters must touch one another ie: hand shake, hug, slap, push etc.
The entire scene can be no shorter than 8 seconds, it can be as long as you'd like it to be.

Approach

Hopefully by now we all understand the importance of strong posing. These are the foundation drawings your entire scene rests upon. Important also is the choreography of the scene, you will need to pay close attention to how both characters move, their relation to each other (negative space) and to whom you want the audience looking. Be careful not to animate an important action on one character while the audience is looking at the other; plan carefully who will be moving when so as not to lose your audience.
This is a DRAWING assignment. DO NOT work in FLASH.

If you have questions, please email me or post them to the blog. If you want to show me your rough ideas before starting, you can post them to your blog and email me to look at them.

As inspiration I would recommend checking out The Emperors New Groove, specifically the scenes between Krank and Izma as they plan to poison Kuzco. Watch the negative space between the two characters and how your eye is directed by the line of action in the posing.

Hey guys,

I just want to double-check class times for Monday. The most recent schedule I've got says that we're starting at 1pm on Monday, 9am Tuesday, 1pm Wednesday, 9am Thursday and 9:30am Friday. Is this right? I just heard rumour at one point that something was start at 10am....and there was the original schedule which had us in at 8:30. Help computer!

Rome Season 2 Marathon

We all watched Season 1 last semester but because of our busy schedules we never got around to Season 2. So let's meet up at my place for a Marathon of Rome.

When: Tuesday December 18th, (tentative, I have to check with my roomate and bf)
Time: We'll start the show at 11am.

Hey guys, we're almost through the infamous 3rd semester. I'm sure that stress levels are high, but just think in less than two weeks we can relax.

So I'm going to have a party at my house (no pool this time). My bf, Nelson is going to be DJing. I'd like to keep the video games to a minimum this time because I'd like it to be more social and have some good music going.

Most of you have been to my place, but if you can't remember the address or how to get there, come see me.

Here are the details:

Where: Lalena's House on Lytton St at Mt. Seymour Parkway.
What: Music, socializing, drinking, perhaps a few video games early on (I have two really sweet chill out rooms).
When: Saturday, December 15th, 6pm
Bring: Beverages of the alcoholic nature, appetizers if you wish.

Again, no drinking and driving please. Crash on my floor, couch or whatever if you must. Last bus to Phibbs Exchange from my house is at 1:52am.

Okay, so i'm inside my eyebrow comp and trying to make a snazzy new pair of eyebrows to suit my expression. Im using the brush tool but it doesnt work properly and seems to stuck on paint inside. This doesnt happen to all of my comps just some of them. HELP!

Hope Monday's guest worked out well.

Here is a reminder (from the outline) for what grading will be based on for this course. For this Monday, please have your character designs and layouts complete and submitted to:

tsunami/students/!class of 2008/ANIM235/Your Folder/

(make a folder with your name on it)

Character designs need to be submitted as a single FLA file per student (copy characters into one Flash file).

Backgrounds should be submitted as PSD files if you made them in Photoshop, FLA files if they were done in Flash.

These need to be in the folders by the end of class.

Required:
1. Drawings that show the development of designs
2. A single Flash file containing character builds for all characters

A – Both components. Thought-out, evolved characters that relate to each other (in terms of design) and are aesthetic and complete. Character builds that work along industry standards (working within symbols) with comp symbols for mouths and eyes.
